<p>Apparently, you can tell whether a fruit is rich in phytochemicals by the color of its edible portion. Phytochemicals are naturally-occurring compounds that are found in plants. Generally, phytochemicals refers to plant compounds that may have an impact on human health although they are not established essential nutrients. Examples include carotenoids and flavonoids.</p>
<p>Linda M. Oude Griep, M.Sc. and team set out to determine whether there might be a link between vegetable and fruit color group consumption and 10-year stroke incidence. Their study involved 20,069 adults, with an average age of 41 years. None of them had any cardiovascular disease when the study began &#8211; they had all filled in a 178-item food frequency questionnaire for the previous year.</p>
<p>They classified the fruits and vegetables into the following color groups:</p>
<ul>
<li>Cabbages, lettuces and other dark green leafy vegetables</li>
<li>Orange and yellow colors, most of which were citrus fruits</li>
<li>Red and purple colors, most of which were red vegetables</li>
<li>White colors, apples and pears made up 55% of them</li>
</ul>
<p>The researchers documented 233 strokes during the ten-year follow up period. They found that stroke incidence was not impacted by the consumption of orange/yellow and red/purple fruits. However, a high intake of white fruits and vegetables was found to be associated with a 52% lower risk of developing stroke, compared to a low intake.</p>
<p>There was a 9% reduced risk of stroke for every 25 gram increase in daily white fruit and vegetable consumption. An average sized apple weighs about 120 grams.</p>
<p>Linda M. Oude Griep, M.Sc., said:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;To prevent stroke, it may be useful to consume considerable amounts of white fruits and vegetables. For example, eating one apple a day is an easy way to increase white fruits and vegetable intake.</p>
<p>However, other fruits and vegetable color groups may protect against other chronic diseases. Therefore, it remains of importance to consume a lot of fruits and vegetables.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Pears and apples are rich in quercetin, a flavonoid, as well as dietary fiber. The authors wrote that white category fruit and vegetables include cucumber, chicory, cauliflower and banana. Potatoes were classed as starch.</p>
<p>Current US federal dietary guidelines recommend picking varying vegetables from five subgroups: starchy, legume, red/orange, dark/green and other vegetables.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Biggest Loser is one of the most popular TV shows on, boasting some 10 million viewers each week.  But is the show transparent about its contestants push to lose weight?</p>
<p>Now, I&#8217;ll be the first to say that The Biggest Loser is inspiring, and doing good for a lot of contestants while also giving hope to viewers that they can do it too.  I have personally run two Biggest Loser contests where we focused on lifestyle changes (as opposed to dramatic weight loss).  Also, the techniques described here are &#8220;not allowed&#8221; by the show and could lead to disqualification- but apparently are done anyway.</p>
<p>However, consider the story of Ryan C. Benson- the first season&#8217;s winner.  He is self described as &#8220;shunned&#8221; by the show because he has gained back nearly all of his weight- now over 300 pounds again.  Also, he admitted to doing extreme fasting and using dehydration techniques in order to weigh less to win the program.  Extreme meaning no water for 24 hours prior to weigh in to the point of urinating blood.</p>
<p>Kai Hibbard, runner up in season 3, confirms the extreme dehydration techniques, reporting that many contestants would not drink the 24 hours prior to a weigh in and when the cameras were off would be working out in as many clothes as possible to sweat out excess water weight.  It is reported that some contestants would gain as much as 20% of water weight back after the weigh ins.  That&#8217;s over 50 pounds for some!</p>
<p>Additionally, it has been proposed that a &#8220;week&#8221; on the show may be two or three weeks in real life.  Not to mention that contestants work out on average between 4 and 6 hours per day.  Neither of these are realistic or sustainable for the average person.</p>
<p>Extreme fasting, crash detox diets, and manipulating water weight- all bad ideas for sustainable weight loss.  If you would like some real answers for weight loss that are both safe and work, then fill out the form on the right and I will personally coach you through some common sense approaches to weight management.</p>

		<title>Vitamin Supplementation May Shorten Life- One study (mis)Reports</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A good friend of mine sent me an article from the BBC this morning titled <em>Vitamins linked with higher death risk in older women.  </em>After reading the article- I agree with some points, and disagree with others.</p>
<p>The article only mentions three supplements- Iron, Vitamin D, and Calcium.  It says there is a positive correlation between long life and calcium supplementation- meaning<strong> if you take calcium as a woman, you are likely to live longer than those that do not</strong>.</p>
<p>With women,<strong> those who supplemented iron had a 2.4% higher death rate than those who did not</strong>.  <strong>But the article does not take into account what is called iron overload</strong>.  Women, after menopause, no longer need excess iron in the diet, but many continue to ignorantly supplement it.  Unlike most other vitamins and minerals, excess iron is continually stored in the body instead of being eliminated in the urine.  As a result, men after age 20 and women after menopause develop iron overload leading to suppressed immune function, weight gain, and type II diabetes all of which can aid a premature death.   (See <a title="Iron: Too Much of a Good Thing by Bill Sardi" href="http://rejuvenationhealth.com/2011/10/11/too-much-iron-in-your-diet-may-kill-you-prematurely/" target="_blank">Iron: Too Much of A Good Thing by Bill Sardi</a>)</p>
<p><strong>This study is limited in that is makes no mention as to brand</strong>.  It also makes no mention of the tens of thousands of studies that show a positive correlation between longer life, lower rates of disease, and vitamin supplementation. (For example, Omega 3 Fish Oil alone has over 4,000 positive studies)</p>
<p><strong>The most ignorant and baffling statement in the article is as follows:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;generally, people should get all the vitamins and minerals they need from a healthy and balanced diet&#8221;</em></p></blockquote>
<p>There is ZERO proof for this cited in the article, and I would argue ZERO substantial proof that can be found for this statement in any large body of research.  In fact, consensus points to the numerous published studies showing<strong> you cannot get all your vitamins and minerals from a balanced diet </strong>(see <a title="Why You Must Supplement Part 1" href="http://rejuvenationhealth.com/2010/03/22/why-you-must-supplement-part-1/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a title="Why You Must Supplement Part 2" href="http://rejuvenationhealth.com/2010/03/23/why-you-must-supplement-part-2/" target="_blank">here</a>), primarily as our soils are depleted in minerals.  The USDA began reporting this in the 1930&#8242;s.</p>
